How to Care for Your New Tattoo

You took a long time choosing your new tattoo, you chose a good tattooist, and now you have your tattoo, and you’re delighted! But that delight can turn to disaster without proper aftercare.

The first few weeks after a tattoo are the most important time in the aftercare experience, especially the first few days when the area might still be sensitive and open to bacteria. Your tattooist will give you instructions for proper aftercare, including keeping the area completely clean and free from bacteria, including dust and airborne particles.

The bandage placed over your tattoo immediately after its creation has to be kept firmly in place for about half a day and there must be no gaps in the bandage through which germs and moisture can access the area.

When the bandage comes off it’s time to begin cleansing the area and carefully drying it afterwards. Once dry an antibacterial cream can be applied to prevent infection and help prevent scabs forming. Your tattoo artist will normally provide the cream for you or might otherwise recommend a good brand to buy at your local pharmacy. Do not cut corners or try to save money by purchasing an inferior cream or no cream at all.

Once the wound is healed you should still take care of the affected area by avoiding heavily scented soaps and lotions. Soap prepared for babies has no chemicals or perfumes added and is perfect for keeping your tattooed area clean and infection free in the first few months after receiving the tattoo.
